The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced a new service that allows mobile operators to share government-funded towers for 4G services. This means users of Jio, Airtel, and BSNL can now connect to 4G networks and make calls even if their own network signal is unavailable. They can seamlessly use other available networks, ensuring better connectivity.

The service, called Intra Circle Roaming (ICR), enables
telecom companies to share infrastructure on towers funded by the Digital
Bharat Nidhi (DBN). DBN is a government fund aimed at improving telecom access
and quality across India. Previously known as the Universal Service Obligation
Fund (USOF), this initiative has been updated under the Telecommunications Act
of 2023.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the launch,
highlighting its importance. He stated, “With three major providers – BSNL,
Airtel, and Jio – working together to share DBN-funded infrastructure, we’re
providing better connectivity and more freedom of choice for customers. Over
27,836 such towers will ensure widespread 4G access across the nation.”
This development reduces the need for additional towers,
as a single DBN-funded tower can now serve multiple operators. It will benefit
millions of people, particularly in rural and remote areas. According to the
DoT, these 27,000 towers will provide seamless 4G connectivity to over 35,400
villages across India.
With this initiative, staying connected even in areas with weak signals is becoming easier, ensuring uninterrupted communication for all.
